Oi, Ooi Boon Ewe ... now a President wannabe?!

C'mon. You've got to be kidding. It's still fresh in my mind the title of the screenshot article, "WHERE HAVE ALL THE OOI SUPPORTERS GONE?" in this post of mine, "Undependable independent candidates???".

Is the whole thing just an instant way to gain publicity? I begin to wonder...

The man who failed in his bid to contest as an independent candidate at the recent general election now intends to run in the presidential election.

Ooi Boon Ewe was the first person to turn up at the elections department on Wednesday morning to apply for the certificate of eligibility.

The 70-year-old said he has resigned as chairman of his political party- the People's Liberal Democratic Party - in order to run.

Mr Ooi, who is currently self-employed, said he hopes that one of the eligibility criteria will be waived.

He was referring to the criteria where the candidate has had experience as a chairman or chief executive officer of a company with a paid up capital of at least S$100 million.

Application forms are made available daily during office hours, starting from 9am at the election department, and will close on the third day after a writ is issued for the presidential election.

Unlike the general election, potential candidates for the presidential election have to turn up personally at the election department as the forms are not available online.

Channel NewsAsia understands that another potential candidate and former PAP MP Dr Tan Cheng Bock will apply for the certificate later Wednesday.

The presidential election must be held before August 31.
