Singapore girl gang-raped: not an entertaintment at all (So why the insensitive Mood Meter?!?!)

Sure there's an outrage (and deservingly so) with regards to the latest news on the Singapore student allegedly gang-raped by 3 Nepalese in Hong Kong.

There's an equally outrage with Google News mistakenly categorized the news under 'Entertainment'.

That even made it to Stomp. As expected.

What I personally find it annoying & upsetting that even Stomp & Asiaone published the incident along with its notorious 'moodmeter' (And yes, this is not the first time I was disgusted with the use of 'moodmeter'. Check out, "Cherry Foo died in Tioman accident -- and 2% of Asiaone readers are AMUSED about the story?!?!").

In Stomp, "So insensitive of Google to classify rape of S'pore girl as 'entertainment'", 16% of the readers expressed 'LOL'

In Asiaone, "S'pore student on HK exchange stint gang-raped", 15% of the readers 'like this' & 7% were 'amused'.

Thanks goodness there's no 'moodmeter' for articles published by Straits Times online.

A SINGAPOREAN undergraduate was gang-raped last month while on an exchange programme in Hong Kong, Hong Kong newspaper Sing Tao Daily reported on Sunday.

The Hong Kong police have arrested a man in connection with the crime, and are looking for two others who are believed to have been involved.

The woman, 22, had gone alone to a bar in Lan Kwai Fong, an area in the Central district with many bars and restaurants, and had become drunk.

Three Nepalese men who worked in the bar - two of whom are believed to be brothers - approached her and invited her to a party on a yacht.

She accepted their invitation, and they took her to a yacht in the Causeway Bay area, where they took turns to rape her, for a total of six times. The men had left by the time she woke up the following morning. She made a police report, and was taken to hospital for an examination.

Police in Hong Kong have classified the case as rape, the newspaper said. Police identified the three men, after visiting the bar and the yacht and reviewing the bar's closed-circuit television footage, and arrested one of the men near Lan Kwai Fong.

From Straits Times, "S'porean gang-raped in HK".

Update on 08/07: it's clarified by Singapore MFA that the victim was not a Singaporean. Not really sure the source of error: Hong Kong media or Hong Kong police? Guess what really matters most is whether the three Nepalese animals will be castrated for their crime.

Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said yesterday that the woman allegedly raped by three men was not a Singaporean, as reported by national daily The Straits Times.

Local media had reported that the university student was from Singapore. She was allegedly gang-raped while on an exchange programme in Hong Kong.

This happened on June 29 when the young woman was allegedly raped six times by three Nepalese men on a yacht.

She had met them earlier at a pub in Lan Kwai Fong, Hong Kong's famous nightlife district.

Two men were charged on Monday with rape as well as aiding and abetting rape. The third, who is out on bail, is to report back to police by the end of the month.

From Asiaone, "Hong Kong gang-rape victim not Singaporean, says MFA".

The female university student who was allegedly gang-raped in Hong Kong is not a Singaporean, as previously reported by foreign and local media.

"The Singapore Consulate-General in Hong Kong has been informed by Hong Kong authorities that media reports of a 22-year-old Singaporean who was gang-raped two weeks ago are not accurate. The Hong Kong authorities have confirmed that the woman is not a Singaporean," a Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) spokesman was quoted by The Straits Times as saying.

The paper said Hong Kong police had not revealed the victim's nationality to any media.

Last week, Hong Kong newspaper Sing Tao Daily reported that three Nepalese men had lured the exchange student, who had gotten herself drunk in the nightclub district of Lan Kwai Fong, onto a yacht in the Causeway Bay area. They then took turns to rape her for a total of six times.

After viewing the closed-circuit television footage at the bar, the police arrested the trio after staking out a flat in Kowloon's Sham Shui Po district, the Straits Times said.

Two of the men were charged on Monday with rape as well as aiding and abetting rape. The other man arrested has been released on bail, and ordered to report back to police later this month.

From XinMSN, "Gang-rape victim not Singaporean".
