Argentina vs. Germany – Predictions

It seems many (beside Octopus Paul, the Oracle) tend to choose Germany as the winner beating Argentina in tonight World Cup Quarterfinal game.

A historical clash takes the field once again, as Germany faces Argentina this Saturday at Green Point Stadium at 10 AM ET in a must-watch quarterfinals game.

World Cup Odds:

Argentina +130

Draw +225

Germany +210

O/U 2.5

Many people are in love with Argentina because they haven’t lost a game in this World Cup so far, but I still have my doubts considering that their defense is pretty slow and they are about to face one of the fastest squads in the competition.

So far, Argentina has dominated their opponents with great ball possession and with the movements of Carlos Tevez and Gonzalo Higuian, which opens great space for Lionel Messi’s creativity up front.

The Argentineans are the highest scoring team at the World Cup, but their rivals, in my opinion, have been soft and haven’t presented any real challenge for them. Germany will change all that.

The Germans have beaten teams like England and Ghana, which are great teams on many levels.

Germany’s speed is the most appealing to me, especially if you consider that three of their four attackers are really young and full of speed.

The playmaker Mesut Ozil could be the factor that gives Diego Maradona many questions. For example, if Javier Mascherano decides to follow Ozil to block him, Argentina will have a huge hole up the middle that Khedira could take advantage coming from behind.

If Mascherano doesn’t follow Ozil, their defense will have to try to control his movements and that might allow speed closer to the goal, which could be a serious danger.

Diego Maradona is still thinking who the best option is for this game. I would consider putting Veron in and probably taking out Angel Di Maria, giving Argentina more ball control but less strength up front.

Of course Messi and Ozil are the key players for this game, but I think Coach Joachim Low is a better tactician than Maradona , and he already knows how to slow Messi down, as opposed to Diego with Ozil.

Germany and Argentina have faced each other 18 times, with 5 wins for the Europeans, 8 for the South Americans, and five ties.

Not to mention that they have met in five games on the World Cup stage, where the last three were the most important ones.

In 1986, Diego Maradona led Argentina to a 3-2 win over Germany in the World Cup final in Mexico. Four years later, they met again at the same stage with a controversial 1-0 victory for the Germans.

Four years ago, Germany eliminated Argentina from the competition with a penalties victory after tying at one.

It’s time to handicap the Argentina vs Germany odds and make World Cup betting predictions on this intriguing matchup.

Argentina has had a very successful 2010 World Cup schedule after some questions arose about Diego Maradona’s ability to effectively coach the side in qualifying. They started off with a 1-0 win over Nigeria before beating South Korea 4-1 and Greece 2-0 to reach the group stage, and then showed they were still playing tip top football with a 3-1 victory over Mexico. Germany has been equally as impressive during the World Cup with a 4-0 win against Australia, a 0-1 loss to Serbia, a 1-0 win against Ghana, and a 4-1 thumping of England.

Germany vs Argentina odds have Argentina as the +120 favorite with Germany at +225, the draw at +200, and the “Under 2.5 Goals” the moderate sized betting favorite at -145.

Start time for the World Cup match between Germany and Argentina is set for 10:00 AM ET and the betting predictions in this one are quite interesting because of the occasional defensive mistakes from both squads make. The over would seem like the sensible World Cup bet but both squads look so good on defense at times that it’s hard to write off the mistakes as being something that isn’t correctable and maybe all it takes is opposition like they’ll face on Saturday to bring a better effort out of each other.

I’ve handicapped the World Cup betting odds and I think the best bet is to go with Germany at +225 because of how overrated Argentina is. This is a tough contest to select a bet in but I think that there is no way the Germans should be this high on the betting odds when you consider Argentina’s huge troubles in qualifying, the Diego Maradona wild card, and the fact that Lionel Messi has been feeling ill this week.
